Is Plug-In Solar Legal in the UK? The 800VA Rule Explained
Yes. Plug-in solar is legal in Great Britain from 27 August 2026, provided the equipment produces no more than 800VA of AC output and you notify your network operator under G98 within 28 days of plugging it in. The notification is free and cannot be refused.
That is the short version. The longer version matters, because the single most repeated claim about these kits, that you are limited to 800W of solar panels, is wrong. Getting this right changes what you should buy.
What actually changed on 27 August 2026
Before that date there was no route for an ordinary household to plug a solar generator into a socket in Great Britain. Equipment existed and was sold across Europe, but connecting it here sat in a grey area that most sellers avoided.
The government announcement of 26 August 2026 created a defined category: a small generator, capped at 800VA, that a householder can connect to a standard socket without an electrician and without a formal application. The Energy Secretary framed it as a way for people to start saving without a roof installation, and put the figure at up to £110 a year, roughly a fifth of a typical household's electricity.
Several large retailers said they would begin stocking within weeks. So the category is new, the rules are firm, and the products reaching the market vary a lot in whether they actually comply.
The 800VA limit applies to the inverter, not the panels
This is the part worth reading twice.
Your solar panel produces direct current. A microinverter converts that into the alternating current your house uses, and it is the microinverter that connects to the socket. The 800VA ceiling is a limit on what the microinverter can push into your home. It says nothing about the size of the panel feeding it.
A 625W panel behind a 620VA microinverter is compliant. So is a 700W panel behind the same inverter. The inverter physically cannot deliver more than its rating, no matter how bright the day, so the cap holds regardless of what is bolted to the balcony.

Why a bigger panel behind a smaller inverter is deliberate
It looks like a mismatch and it is not. A panel rated 625W reaches 625W only in laboratory conditions: bright, direct, perpendicular light at 25 °C. A British balcony in October delivers a fraction of that.
Fitting a generous panel to a smaller inverter means the system reaches useful output earlier in the morning, holds it later into the evening, and produces more on overcast days, which is most of them here. The inverter clips only during the brief peak of a clear summer afternoon. You lose a little at the top and gain considerably across the year.
G98: the notification you must not skip
G98 is the engineering standard covering small generators connected to the public network. For plug-in solar it works on a "fit and notify" basis, which is exactly what it sounds like.
- Buy and install compliant equipment.
- Plug it in.
- Notify your Distribution Network Operator within 28 days.
Two things people misunderstand. First, it is not an application. You are not asking permission and it cannot be turned down for a compliant device. Second, it is free. Anyone charging you a fee to submit a G98 for a plug-in kit is charging for filling in a form.
Your DNO is not your electricity supplier. It is the company that owns the cables in your street, determined by region rather than by who you buy power from. Your supplier can tell you which one it is, and the form asks for the device details and its type-test evidence.
Ask for the ENA registration number before you buy. Compliant inverters are type-tested and listed on the Energy Networks Association register. A seller who cannot produce a registration reference for the exact model is selling you something you may not be able to notify. Permissions: the part that catches people out
The electrical rules are national. Permission to attach something to a building is not.

Planning permission is not normally needed for equipment under 800W on a balcony or external wall, but "not normally" is doing real work in that sentence. Five minutes with your local planning authority is cheaper than removing an installation.
What it will actually save you
The government figure is up to £110 a year. That is an upper bound, and it rests on an assumption worth making explicit: you only save on electricity you use while the sun is shining.
There is no battery in a plug-in system and no export payment. Generation that nobody in the house is using is simply lost. So the value depends less on your roof angle than on your routine.
- Someone home during the day, working remotely, retired, small children: you will capture most of it.
- House empty 8 till 6: you will capture the fridge, the router, the standby loads and not much else. Expect well under the headline.
- Shiftable loads help: running the dishwasher, washing machine or a slow cooker at midday turns generation into savings.
Be realistic about scale too. One panel offsets a fridge, a router, a laptop, a TV and background draw. It will not run an electric shower, an immersion heater or a car charger. Anyone implying otherwise is selling.
A short buyer's checklist
- Inverter output, not panel wattage. Confirm the AC rating is 800VA or less. This is the number that decides legality.
- ENA registration reference for the exact model. No reference, no purchase.
- A proper UK plug and lead. Kits imported for the European market often arrive with a Schuko plug and no fused UK equivalent.
- Panel size and weight against your mounting. A 625W panel is around 2.4m long and 33kg. That is a two-person job and too much for many balcony railings. Check the mount's rating.
- IP rating on the inverter. It lives outdoors. IP67 is what you want.
- Warranty terms on the inverter specifically. Panels routinely carry 25 years. Inverters are the part that fails, so read that number separately.
- Monitoring. Without it you have no idea whether the thing is working, and a silent failure can go unnoticed for months.
Mistakes we expect to see a lot of
Buying a 1000W or 2000W microinverter for a socket. These are good products for wired installations, but they are outside the plug-in category. They require a fixed connection and a G99 application, which is a genuine approval process rather than a notification.
Plugging in two kits. The 800VA ceiling covers your total plug-in generation, not each device. Two 600VA units is 1200VA and puts you outside the rules even though each unit is individually compliant.
Using an extension lead or a multi-way adaptor. Connect to a dedicated wall socket. Daisy-chaining generation through a trailing lead is not what those leads are designed for.
Assuming a south-facing wall is essential. South is best, but east and west facing installations spread generation across the morning and evening, which can match household use better than a midday peak nobody is home for.

Is plug-in solar legal in the whole of the UK?
The 27 August 2026 change applies to Great Britain. Northern Ireland has a separate regulatory framework, so check locally before buying.
Do I need an MCS installer?
No. MCS certification relates to installations that qualify for schemes such as the Smart Export Guarantee. A plug-in kit is not eligible for export payments and does not need an MCS installer, which is precisely why the category exists.
What happens if I do not submit the G98?
You are operating outside the rules, and your network operator has no record of generation on their network. It is free and takes minutes, so there is no sensible reason to skip it.
Can I add a battery?
Not within the plug-in category as it stands. Adding storage moves you into a fixed installation with the corresponding approvals.
Will it work during a power cut?
No. Grid-tied microinverters shut down when the grid goes down, deliberately, so that they cannot energise cables that engineers believe are dead.
Does it need cleaning?
Rarely in the UK. Rain handles most of it. A panel mounted flat rather than tilted will hold more dirt, which is one more argument for a tilted mount.
