Description
xVictron Inverter 48/1600 230V VE.Direct UK
The Victron Inverter 48/1600 converts power from a 48 V battery bank into 230 V 50 Hz AC through a built-in UK BS 1363 socket. It delivers 1,450 W continuous at 25 °C and 2,100 W peak. It suits installers building 48 V off-grid, mobile and backup systems that need mains-voltage AC for small to medium loads.
Key Features
- 1,450 W continuous output at 25 °C, 1,300 W at 40 °C and 2,100 W peak for motor and inrush loads.
- DC input range of 36.8 V to 62 V, matched to 48 V nominal battery systems.
- ECO mode cuts no-load consumption from 15 W to 3 W, with an adjustable stop and start power setting and a 2.5 s retry interval.
- Dynamic low DC shutdown, plus a fixed low DC shutdown at 37.2 V and a low battery restart and alarm level of 43.6 V.
- VE.Direct communication port for monitoring and full programming of the inverter settings.
- Two-pole remote on/off screw terminal for connection to an external switch or battery management system.
- Protection against output short-circuit, overload, high and low battery voltage, over temperature and excessive DC ripple.
- Operating temperature range of -40 °C to 65 °C and up to 95 % humidity.
- Integrated UK (BS 1363) AC outlet socket, so no separate AC distribution is needed for a single load.
Product Overview
The inverter takes DC from a 48 V battery bank and produces 230 V at 50 Hz with a maximum efficiency of 92 %. Running at 48 V rather than 12 V or 24 V keeps DC current low for the same output, which allows smaller cable sizes and reduces voltage drop between battery and inverter. Battery connection is by 25 mm² (4 AWG) screw terminals.
Standby draw matters on systems that run unattended. At 15 W, an idle inverter consumes around 360 Wh a day. In ECO mode the unit drops to 3 W and checks for a load every 2.5 s, switching on when demand exceeds the adjustable threshold. Dynamic low DC shutdown takes load into account when deciding when to cut out, which helps prevent nuisance trips under heavy loads where battery voltage sags temporarily.
All settings are programmable via the VE.Direct port, so voltage thresholds and ECO mode behaviour can be set to suit the battery bank and the application. The unit is built on a steel chassis with a plastic cover and is rated IP21. It is certified to EN-IEC 60335-1 and EN-IEC 62109-1 for safety and carries ECE R10-4 automotive approval for vehicle installations.

Applications
- Off-grid cabins and outbuildings running a 48 V battery bank charged by solar, where low ECO mode draw protects battery capacity overnight.
- Motorhomes, expedition vehicles and service vans built on a 48 V system, supported by ECE R10-4 automotive approval.
- Remote monitoring, telecoms and security sites that need a 230 V supply for low-power equipment from a 48 V battery.
- Dedicated AC supply for individual appliances or tools in 48 V solar and battery installations, using the built-in UK socket.
Installation Notes
This inverter needs a 48 V nominal battery bank. Set the low voltage shutdown, restart and charged detection thresholds via VE.Direct to suit the battery chemistry and the manufacturer's limits, particularly for lithium batteries with their own BMS. Use cable and DC overcurrent protection sized for the full DC current at peak load, terminated in the 25 mm² screw terminals. The IP21 rating means the unit must be mounted in a dry, ventilated indoor location. Continuous output falls at higher ambient temperatures, so allow for this when sizing for warm enclosures. Battery, DC and AC wiring should be carried out by a qualified electrician, and any system that includes solar PV should be installed by an MCS-accredited installer.
