Description
xHoymiles HiBattery 4020 X Plug In Solar Battery Storage 4kWh with Built In Microinverter
The Hoymiles HiBattery 4020 X combines a 4kWh LiFePO4 battery, a four-input solar microinverter and a backup power socket in one compact, IP66-rated unit. It stores the solar energy your panels produce during the day and releases it in the evening, so you use more of your own generation at home instead of exporting it for very little.
Designed for homes with a small solar array, balcony or garden panels, the HB-4020-X model limits grid export to 800W and can be expanded to around 16kWh with additional HiBattery battery packs as your needs grow.
Key Features
- 4.02kWh LiFePO4 battery (314Ah cells), expandable to around 16kWh with HB-4020-S battery packs
- 4 independent MPPT inputs, up to 1000W per input and 4kW PV in total, for up to 8 solar modules
- 800W rated AC on-grid output on the HB-4020-X model
- 2500W off-grid backup output to keep essential appliances running during a power cut
- Cycle life of 8,000 or more cycles at 70% state of health, with a 10 year manufacturer warranty
- IP66 enclosure, natural convection cooling and noise below 20dB
- Built in aerosol fire suppression, pressure relief valve and DC terminal over temperature protection
- Automatic self heating below 0°C to keep the battery within its charging temperature range
- Bluetooth and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi monitoring through the S-Miles Home app, with open MQTT for third party energy management
Product Overview
Most small solar systems generate their peak output around midday, when household demand is often at its lowest. The HiBattery 4020 X solves this by charging its battery from your panels at up to 2000W and discharging it when you need the energy, smoothing out your solar generation across the day and evening.
Your panels connect directly to the unit's four MPPT inputs (16 to 60V operating range), so no separate microinverter or charge controller is needed. The built in isolated inverter delivers up to 800W to the home on the HB-4020-X model, matching the output level commonly used for plug in solar systems.
When the grid fails, the separate off-grid port provides up to 2500W at 230V, ideal for keeping a fridge, router, lighting or other essential loads running. The Hoymiles BMS integrates 48 protection functions, intelligent cell balancing and pack level DC/DC balancing to protect the cells and extend battery life.
The HiBattery works with Hoymiles meters and selected third party meters (Shelly and Everhome), and supports the open MQTT protocol, so it can be integrated with compatible home energy management systems.
Expandable Battery Storage
Start with the 4.02kWh built in battery and add HB-4020-S stackable battery packs (4.02kWh each, sold separately) to build up to around 16kWh of storage. Each expansion pack carries the same LiFePO4 chemistry, IP66 protection and 10 year warranty as the main unit.
Applications
- Storing surplus energy from plug in, balcony and garden solar panels
- Increasing self consumption of solar generation in homes and flats
- Backup power for essential loads during a grid outage
- Garden offices, garages and outbuildings with small solar arrays
- Indoor or outdoor installation thanks to the IP66 rated enclosure
What Is Included
- 1 x Hoymiles HiBattery 4020 X (HB-4020-X) with built in 4.02kWh battery and microinverter
Installation and Safety Notes
The HiBattery 4020 X is IP66 rated and may be installed indoors or outdoors within its operating range of -20 to 55°C and at altitudes up to 4000m. Protect it from direct, prolonged sunlight where possible and allow free airflow around the unit, as it relies on natural convection cooling.
The unit weighs 42kg, so use a two person lift and position it on a firm, level surface. Solar modules must stay within the input limits of each MPPT (60V maximum input voltage, 32A maximum input current, 40A maximum short circuit current).
We recommend that a qualified electrician or MCS certified installer checks the circuit the unit connects to, including cable sizing, protective devices, isolation and earthing, in line with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations). Grid connection must meet current ENA and DNO requirements, including G98 notification where applicable. The off-grid backup port must never be connected to the household wiring or the grid.
Important: this is a lithium battery system containing stored energy. Do not open the enclosure or attempt internal repairs; contact our technical team for support.
